http://publicdomainremix.wordpress.com/

I’ve created a new blog that is located at http://publicdomainremix.wordpress.com/

I know, I promised to only have this blog, but I can’t help but wanting to create new blogs for various purposes, while keeping this main blog from being a spam trap type of thing. The new blog at http://publicdomainremix.wordpress.com/ is mainly going to be used to locate, use, and remix various public domain video, images, audio, text, and other interesting things. The public domain is a very wide arena that has a bunch of potential for a lot of different things in my opinion, and I want to start exploring that wide and crazy world of public domain remixes. I have a lot of ideas on where to go with that.

The other main blog that I maintain currently, if you have not figured it out yet (since it’s linked over in widget to the right) is http://www.mastermesh.wordpress.com. That’s where I keep my delicious.com bookmarks backed up. I like posting those to a blog since I bookmark a ton of different places.

Fast food is bad for you.

Fast food is bad for you.

Remember, it should be called Kentucky Fried Shitten because thats what it’ll end up making you do.

Remember it should be called Grease-a Hut because the pizza is super greasy.

Remember it should be called Smackdonalds because you need to be smacked for eating such unhealthy stuff.

Remember, many call it Taco Hell for a lot of different reasons.

Remember, a 6.00 burger is really a 6.00 poo in disguise. Take a look at your stool sometime – did you really want to pay 6.00 for that?

Walking the dog in the morning.

In the mornings when I walk our dog, it is a peacefully quite and serene time. The rest of the world is not fully awake. Some lights are always on though, even if the sun is not up yet shining in it’s glory. In many ways I feel as though I am walking through an Edward Hopper painting. It’s a peaceful calm, yet there is still some movement – some signs of life.

There are many small shops in the town we live in, and I walk past the display windows. Some businesses keep their lights on to deter crime. Others are completely dark. It is interesting to peer in to the windows of these closed shops as I stroll by with my four legged companion. I sometimes take a digital camera with me to shoot the display windows and various interesting patterns that the street lights create. There is an an artful beauty to it all, which many will never witness. That is why I take my photos. There is an entire interesting beauty to it which I’d like to show the world. I see myself, both as a painter and photographer, as someone pointing people in ways that will open their eyes to the beauty around them. Observation is a powerful thing – and it can bring you to recognize your place in the world. It can help you understand more of the connections between a variety of things and mankind.

It can help you see the small things that you don’t always notice as you rush past in a fast paced hurry to get to the next thing so that you can sit and wait, sit and wait, sit and wait until it is time to hurry again to the next pointless thing you will do, whether it’s sitting like a couch potato listening to the bobble heads on TV tell you various myths of their false stories which has very little eductational purpose to it other then to fill your head with useless knowledge, going to work daily to do other people’s jobs so that they will pay you money that they obtained in ways that are typically not really honerable underneath it all, or rushing home along paved highways that destroyed the beauty that was once there so you can sit in your house which will not be carried with you in to the next life and watch the 10′ o clock news about the angry protesters fighting a war against a war that should never have been started in the first place but was because no one stood up for the rights of life and compassion at the beginning and just let things rush on and on and on til they got to where we are now as the mindless masses listened to the shouts of the arogant ignorant who were rushing and rushing, never taking the time to stop and think, never taking the time to realize what the powers of creation could do, and instead chose the path of destruction, which has caused entire nations to be destoyed throughout the course of history over and over and over again… Why is it that people like listening to John Lenon songs after a war, but not before it? Something to think about…

I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but it just seems that many times we rush around doing things that ignore our basic essential needs to connect with one another and the world around us. We should make it more of a priority to listen to the birds chirping, watch the river flowing, study the patterns of the tree bark growing, be in awe of the things our ancestors have created that are still visible in the old parts of our cities, see the squirrels running and jumping, watch the grasshoppers, see the ants crawling in the grass that we miss when we walk past this hollowed ground daily, constanly being in a hurry to rush past as fast as possible… constantly hurrying to get to the next place to sit and wait – slaves to our society, obeying the rules that others set up for us, not thinking about how to live our lives the way we want to live them in harmony with nature and our neighbors.

Shakespear was wrong.

Shakespeare was wrong – all the world is not a play. All of the world is a Dance Hall.

Plays are scripted. The director knows what is going to happen next, and the actors and acrtresses have rehearsed their parts and at least have a good idea of what will happen next even if everything does not go right.

Life, on the other hand, is not scripted. We all have our parts to play, of course, but how anyone will react or what they will do next is not completely known. Some will try to become the center of attention doing ball room dances they have studied for years. Others will move in strange and interesting ways, listening to their own beat and rythm. Some might break dance while others do waltzes. Some may dance closely together with others while dance on their own in line dances, constantly trying to fit in with their peers. Some may make the music while others listen to it… Some will simply sit there on the sidelines, sipping their alcohol, doing nothing all the time that they are in this dance hall of life, watching everyone else until it’s time to go.

spent some cash.

I spent about 20 bucks today on ball point ink pens. I got a cheap Wal-Mart Brand called Inc Discover Bold. Not sure if it’ll be up to the Bic standard that I used to always use, but maybe. Price was somewhere around 1.89 for a pack of 22 or so. Since I’m on a budget and am really loving looking at my old ink drawings with all of the scans I’m doing lately, I think I might get back in to doodling with ink pens. I like them more then color pencils for some things since they are fast, can literally have infinite levels of details and grey tones, cross hatches, stippling, etc. if you allow them to, and are really quick, easy, and non-messy to work with (at least if there is no ink leaks in the pens). Once the ink dries it’s even less of a mess then graphite pencils…

As far as the scans go, I have quite a few of the little bitty sketchbooks scanned now, but not all uploaded yet. I’m going back through the scans and cropping each page out since I scanned about 5 pages per scan in most of the latest ones.

The main little sketchbooks left to scan are mainly diaries/dream journals. Back in college, my Senior Project involved doing some oil paintings based on dreams. I’m not sure if I’ll upload the dream journals or not since those are some pretty oddball, hard to read, and private thoughts in some of them… However, I might since they are many years old now and some of the stuff is actually intended as educational or philosophical teaching material on some levels…

Need to edit my categories. I removed a lot of the tags that were not relevant yet, but may be in the future and moved them over to a google document mentioned a few posts ago. I’ll keep growing that list over time as I start honing in on various things to tie keywords to in my future image creations, whether in photos, 3d animation, or illustration.

I plan on having ink pens nearby no matter where I am during the day or night. I want to get in to the habbit of doodling, drawing, writing down ideas, and sketching more as I used to do but have gotten out of the habbit of doing for a variety of reasons.

feet drawing…

I’ve been thinking about this a little… every one of us has legs. Legs typically move a lot daily. I’m thinking it’d be possible to create wonderful abstract, or not-so-abstract paintings and drawings using our legs and feet daily… just put up something to draw/paint on on the floor and randomly move the legs as normal throughout the course of a day and see what happens. Most people are not coordinated enough with feet to hold a paint brush, pencil or ink pen, so I need to create some sort of thing on a shoe that will hold the drawing instruments aimed downward. I have used those spike things before to walk in the snow that you strap on to shoes. I’m wondering if something like that would not work. People let animals create abstract art sometimes. Why not let the limbs that just sit there doing nothing all day do it too? Paper would probably not work well, but boards like hardboard or plywood would probably, unless the crinkles caused by the feet are part of the work… actually sometimes crinkles can work to your advantage in things like this, so why not?

Art is Life and Life is Art.

Something that I have come to realize is that Art is not a reflection of life nor is life a reflection of art. ART IS LIFE and LIFE IS ART! Every minute that I am not creating art, looking at art, or thinking about art in some way, it’s a minute that dead. Art is the substance that created the universe, and is the substance used to substain the universe. It just is as life just is. In order to live a more fullfilling life one must live art, embrace it, become it, think it, be it. Art’s true focus is in opening the mind’s eye so to speak… connecting the dots between the physical and metaphysical… All religions are art, and have rules, ideas, myths, stories about creation. Creation IS ART. Art is the act of creation. It is the act of connecting the dots that make up the universe. Art is the act of learning to percieve the world with a more detailed view. Art is the ability to perceive infinite levels of detail in all areas of Life. Science would not exist without art as a basis. Religion would not exist without art. Technology is science fictional art before it comes to exist. Our dreams are creations of art. Our realities are created because of our dreams.

ART IS LIFE AND LIFE IS ART.

I want to embrace, become, and be art so that I have a more fullfilling life. You should too! πŸ™‚

Lefty Sketch/Doodle Book idea…

When I’m at work, I scribble notes from phone calls, etc. in a notebook that’s next to me all day long. Many times, I doodle out various stuff in the margin, just like anyone else does in any classroom across the country on any given day… Similarly, I have MS Paint up all day and doodle in it sometimes on breaks…

I cannot do the MS Paint thing and concentrate on other things at my job as well, but might be able to do something like that with the sketchpad/notebooks more then I have in the past… since the notepad is on my left sitting on a desk, and my right hand is constantly using a mouse to do various things at work all day…

so… one thing I’m thinking about doing is keeping tons of ink pens on hand to doodle silently as I work away. It won’t be masterpieces, but just various oddball images, etc. It’s something I’ve never done much of in the past, but think there might be possibilities here for a lot of various things. It won’t break my concentration on my job tasks etc…

I have color pencils at work too, but won’t use them too much for this sort of thing, even though I use color pencils on breaks sometimes, because color pencils are too loud, and disturbs the concentration of those around me.

Just seems that there is 40 hours a week that I’m not doing art stuff that’s more or less being wasted, at least artistically (even if it does pay the bills). Want to fix that problem and start doing more art without loosing concentration or focus on what I’m really there 40 hours a week to do. It is possible to multitask – and many times I’m doing that subconsiously anyways as things play around in my brain all day long – maybe it’s time for me to take that to the next level.

http://jeffthomann.t35.com/

http://jeffthomann.t35.com/ is far from complete. I started this new website today to house my Portfolio at some point in the future after I get the scans done, and start having enough actual complete artworks online to have an online portfolio. This blog is acting as a sort of helper to that because it’s helping me get as much of my artwork online as I can and weed through it to figure out what is actually worthy of being in my online portfolio. I plan to constantly keep this whole project in review at all times in the future and continuously edit things to get them to a satisfying level of perfection. It’s a lengthy process.

I will continue to blog here as this process comes to some level of completion. My hope is that I eventually generate enough interest in my artwork that I can eventually, someday, maybe make creating paintings or illustrations, doing scene design, or creating animations and digital props in to a full time job. It may take a while, and might never happen, but at least this blog and that website are here so I can’t say that I didn’t try.

Yes, I’m going about this all wrong in some folks eyes, especially since my artfolio part of the blog is out here for everyone to see, in plain view, but that’s ok with me. It’s a bit of a humbling and “real” picture of where my skills have been, are, and will go in the future as I post more and more things out here. It is something that gives future coworkers, clients, and others a real unbiased look at me, my talents and skills. This is something that’s a bit special, and more then a client in the illustration industry typically gets to see from prospective artists.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-us&q=%22call+for+exhibition%22+%2Bmissouri&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

This is what I have set up as one of the tabs in my homepages… It’s a google search for “call for exhibition” +missouri. As an artist, I think studying this sort of thing on a daily basis might just get me a foothold in to knowing where to submit stuff in the future, and also what sort of stuff people are looking for in various exhibitions. I just really wish this sort of stuff, which is usually juried art shows, didn’t cost the artist… but unfortunately, most times, there is a fee, sometimes big, sometimes small.

scanning still…

I’m still scanning more drawings from the sketchbooks. Since I’m doing 5 of the little pages at a time in each scan, it’s taking less time to scan, but will take me a bit more time to crop out each drawing to upload… Once I get several sketchbooks scanned, I’ll probably go back and do the cropping, and uploading on massive bulks. I could put the 5 page scans out here but don’t want anyone to break their neck looking at sideways or upside down drawings, so I’ll take my time and do it right.

Review of the Twilight Movie – Eclipse

Tekla and I went to see the Third Twilight movie, Eclipse, last night. It was a pretty predictable movie.

Actually, the whole Twilight series is that way, but that’s to be expected since the target audience is a bunch of teenage girls for the most part. The fight scenes were not overly exciting. The “vampire army” was made to sound like they had a lot of strength and power, but really the army was defeated in no time flat by the Cullins and the Wolf pack.

The army was really only a small handful of vampires – maybe 10-20 or so, if I remember correctly. The “army” only injured Jacob by breaking his ribs when one of the neophyte vampires in the army squeezed him. I have not read the book, so don’t know how closely they kept this true to the story, but based on what I’ve read on wikipedia, it sounds like it was fairly close. That is one problem I have with all of the twilight movies so far – the action, when there is action, is fairly calm. Sure, they are throwing one another around, and biting off limbs, but it’s all not very scary, dramatic, or meant for a movie in my opinion.

The main battle in this movie takes place in the middle of the open field in one of the earlier movies. It’s a nice sunny day in the meadow. The environment just does not lend itself well to a gory, bloody fight scene. It also is not really remnescent of the foggy, cloudy days environment that is typical of the area in real life where the movie suppossedly takes place. I guess the reason for that is because the target audience is a bunch of teenage girls that they don’t want to gross out or something?… I want to see more drastic color in a movie about vampires and werewolves…

There is hints of red here and there, but not a lot of bloody, gory stuff that is typical of vampire and werewolf movies. The horror just seems to not be there really – even when Victoria’s head is ripped off, and her boyfriend’s arms are ripped out, the gore is not there and the limbs just look like stone statues…making this more like an anime movie, or teenage soap opera then a real movie about vampires and werewolves.

I mean, sure it’s a love story, but it’s also suppossed to be a horror movie, right? Where’s the shakey camera shots? Where’s the foggy night scenes? There is a chase scene or two through the forest in some places of the movie, but it’s never really “scary” – more like an anime movie or something. When the vampires do go “hunting” for their animal blood, it’s never on scene… The sunny meadow is very cheery. The gory scenes of the army in Seattle are dark-ish, but even those are not really gross me out or scare me out of my wits horror like they should be in my opinion. We should be afraid that this big scary army is coming to the Cullins land and as an audience should be feeling some empathy. It didn’t seem like anyone in the audience had that empathy level because the movie is just too silly… We have a bunch of people jumping around like they belong on Dragon Ball Z more then a vampire or werewolf movie. We see bright sunny skies (ok, it’s suppossed to be overcast, and that’s why we don’t see the sparkles in the vampres – but many of those scenes look way to bright on gamma to be too cloudy to me – or maybe they just dulled it out too much so it looks a lot brighter then it really is or something)… Yes, the movie was ok plotwise, but as I mentioned, somewhat predictable.

The focus on the live triangle is important, but they could have at least put a little gore in there, or done some of the camera angles up closer to hone in on the battle scenes more from a first person perspective instead of leaving it all in third person from a distance in a very passive manner. There should have been a lot more drastic colors and things.

Sure, they have mountains scenes that look like they are shot from a helicoptor (probably a 3d camera view from a 3d mountian) but they could have done so much more. Mountains have gigantic 5:00 shadows all over the place. We could have seen lots more doom and gloom. More dramatic flair… More brightly contrasting color schemes to pull the audience attention in on certain things. No, they should not turn it in to a Kill Bill type of blood fest with blood spurting out everywhere, but they could have done something heading a little bit in that direction a lot more then they have done… As it is, the werewolves seem like newborn puppies, even when they are at the most savage scenes in the movie. The vampires just seem like normal people that don’t get a tan. Even though Jacob’s ribs are supposedly broken, we don’t see any camera angles focus in on a closeup of his chest at all during that time of the movie, even though during the rest of the movie he’s running around bare-chested all day long… Aw well, it was worth seeing, but it’s not really worth the money to see it in a movie theater. If I were you, I might wait til it’s out on DVD.

9447 items on Turbosquid!

I was just randomly browsing my turboquid link over in the right column at http://www.jeffthomann.wordpress.com and noticed that I currently have 9447 items on Turbosquid.

Here’s the link:
http://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/mastermesh?referral=mastermesh. Yes, may of the items there are a bit icky as keywords may be off, there may be some blurriness in some photos, etc, but a lot of the items there are actually pretty good. I’ll probably try to upload more there in the next year or two and see if I can’t get over 10k assets there! πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

blog links and stuff…

http://www.jeffthomann.wordpress.com – Main Real Blog. The Start of everything…

http://www.mastermesh.wordpress.com – delicious links feed in to here…

http://www.jeffthomann.blogspot.com/ – old blog, not used currently much…

http://www.jeffthomannsart.blogspot.com/ – middle blog. At the moment, googling for jeffthomann puts this one way up there since it’s been around a lot… It’s pulling feeds from the http://www.jeffthomann.wordpress.com

http://twitter.com/mastermesh – not used much at the moment. This one used to auto feed some stuff with twitterfeed, but since twitterfeed is broken, and I don’t want to get accused of being a sploggy spamming that’s breaking copyrights, it’ll stay silent for now.

http://twitter.com/jeffthomann – My main twitter that pulls stuff from my blog. It’s mainly a middle man.

http://twitter.com/jeffreythomann – big messy pile of goo that pulls everything in that I can get it to pull in.

http://missouricameraguy.blogspot.com/ New-ish blog that sort of acts like the jeffreythomann twitter… sort of a place where a lot of the rss feeds and forwards that are bouncing around will end up.

Might add more links in here later… since there’s a few other blogs I used to have that I might use for something else in the future.

I know, I’m a bit crazy having all these various accounts, but really, it’s much better then having to keep track of multiple blogs like I used to, manually editing each, and is also much better then making one blog that is a spammy mess like this one used to be several months ago before Chris and a few others complained to me. I can and will tweak things from time to time to make it all do what I want in a nicer, cleaner way in the future. Sorry for the confusing messes, but there’s just a lot of various junk in various corners of the internet that I like to visit multiple times and need the links too, etc. Hopefully this isn’t too confusing as I tweak it more and more to do what I want it to do. RSS changed the way the internet works, and this old guy that used to hand tweak vrml and html 3 is still leaning the ropes…
