plywood fun

got plywood today…. blasted lumber yard got me 3/8 inch instead of 1/4 inch, and this thing is very thin and bendy/fragile…. made it work by stacking the old stack shelves up 3 high on top rung to flatten it out… sprayed down the bottom with water just now and laid a ton of books, a hammer or three, and a couple of loaded tool boxes on top to hopefully fix the warping. we’ll see. Order placed recently for the slot cars… hopefully we’ll be up and running on them soon. Work gave me a employee appreciation 20 bucks on Amazon so spent that on some tiny 1/87th scale figures for the train table – cheapest thing I could find on Amazon related to this hobby with shipping, etc. Finally got a couple of them the other day… so tiny… Takes forever for delivery from China, lol. Slowly moving along… This thin plywood isn’t going to take staples the way I wanted it to if it was 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch so ugh…. we’ll figure out something else for the borders if there will be any at all.

RC superstore seems to have cheaper rates than afxracing or walmart at the moment at of 9/4/2022….

This next track layout also fits on a single 4×8 foot table and uses the Tomy AFX Super International Racing Set in addition to one dozen 15″ straight track sections. This layout makes use of every track section contained in the Super International. This design packs a 39 foot lap length on to a simple 4×8 foot table.

If you own the Tomy AFX Super International Racing Set and are thinking about building a permanent HO race track this is an inexpensive layout to construct. Just add a dozen 15″ straights and you’ll have an excellent raceway. The circuit is comprised of three fast straights with a technically challenging infield section.

The table below lists the Tomy AFX track sections required to build the International 39 raceway:
(24) – 15″ Straights (2)  – 9″ Straights (8)  – 6″ Straights (6)  – 3″ Straights
 (1)  – 15″ Radius 1/8 Turn (6)  – 12″ Radius 1/8 Turns (9)  – 9″ Radius 1/8 Turns(12) – 9″ Radius 1/4 Turns(28) – 6″ Radius 1/8 Turns
(2) – 15″ Power Tracks(2) – 22 VDC Power Packs(4) – Tomy AFX Hand Controls

brookfield may be the way to go… now just got to recalculate.

Brookfield 50
This next layout also fits on a single 4×8 sheet of plywood and provides a 51 foot 2-lane raceway. Unlike the River Hills 50 and Caledonia 33, this layout was designed as a flat race track. Several long, fast straights combined with a technical infield section make this an excellent 2-lane road course. The large open area inside of the 180º turn provides ample room for pits and a paddock.

Parts:

Autoworld Scoobie Doo Meets Batman & Robin 18′ HO Slot Car Set

Autoworld Top Fuel Dragstar Return Loop

8 packs of 2 AFX Curve 6″ 1/8 circle ho slot car track section (2 per pack)

1 afx stright 3″ ho slot car section pair (2 per pack)

3 afx stright 6″ ho track section pairs (2 per pack)

I’ll probably swap out one of the 9 inchers with an autoworld 9″ jump track and another with the 9: autoworld lap counter track…

adding in the afx 1968 black flame car since it’s cool and Katrina likes it, 100 track clips, afx track barrier, afx stocker two pack, and a yellow autoworld jeep we are looking at around 530 bucks on rc superstore. It’d be a lot cheaper to do the joysways or goldenbright stuff on walmart but that stuff just looks like toys and is sort of newer versions of ninco or artin type track so is likely not too reliable and it’s all bigger than afx stuff, so it’s not got a lot of expansion possibilities…

p.s. the batman meets scoobie movies (two episodes that run about an hour and a half) can be found in a few places online and in stores… It’s a 2020 or so release remake of 1972 cartoons…

I think I may do a couple of variations of this now that I know more about what I’m doing in the track planner thing.

HERE WE GO!

Scoobie meets Batman +

still need to think this through a bit… it’s over 8 foot long… need it to fit on 8×4 foot plywood panel if possible since we only have a limited amount of room to play with.

Messing around with Ultimate Racer 3.0 today trying to figure out how to lay out this set I’ll be putting together eventually (still waiting on Entropia Universe withdrawal since August 25. They say it takes around 50-60 business days… they take your money instantly but make you wait months to get it back)….

Added in

Auto World HO Slot Car 9″ Lap Counter Track

============

will add in AFX HO Slot Car Track Race Barriers – 3x 31-Inch Sections and a few extra cars…

==========

oh, and important add in:

Auto World HO Slot Car Intersection Track Piece – AFX Compatible – that makes the lower left side sort of take on the Carrera on to the Podium set’s type of shape with the intersection loop… Wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get the 12 inch loop pieces in there but this makes it work pretty easy…

—- also. ..

adding in a 3″ and 6″ straight since I think I’m going to need them… at least one of each, I think, but it’s hard to guesstimate since loop icon is guesstimate in this image… may add 2 just for good measure. I know the loop’s intersection does require one three inch to span width of the loop… but not but not sure on exact math on the rest of it… Hopefully this diagram will help me make this build easier than the HO Track build was where I was just eyeballing everything, staring at a huge pile of old track and getting frustrated with all the different sizes, shapes, diameter, etc.

2 lane

4′ × 8′ Raceways – 2-Lane

This next group of raceways can also be built on a single 4×8 foot table. These layouts however are 2-lane racetracks. See the Tables page for building instructions.

River Hills 50
This next layout fits on a single 4×8 sheet of plywood and provides a 52 foot 2-lane raceway suitable for landscaping. Several long, fast straights combined with a twisty infield section make this an excellent 2-lane raceway. The overpass incorporated into this design provides a means of folding the raceway back in upon itself, and in the process provides additional long straights.

The table below lists the Tomy AFX track sections required to build the River Hills 50 raceway:

(21) – 15″ Straights
(5) – 9″ Straights
(6) – 6″ Straights
(5) – 15″ Radius 1/8 Turns
(4) – 12″ Radius 1/8 Turns
(17) – 9″ Radius 1/8 Turns
(6) – 6″ Radius 1/8 Turns

Caledonia 33
This next 2-lane layout makes exclusive use of the 9″ radius turns found in many 2-lane sets. The diagonal orientation of the main straight makes it possible to create a longer straight than would be possible if the track were aligned squarely with the edges of the table.

This layout can be built on a 4×8 foot table and offers a good deal of open space for landscaping.

This layout design uses the model railroading technique of laying track so that it never runs parallel to the edge of the table. This method provides a track that appears larger then it really is and avoids a static appearance. This is an ideal track for detailed landscaping and would be a good choice for someone wanting a 2-lane track to race both modern and vintage Aurora slot cars.

(16) – 15″ Straights
(4) – 9″ Straights
(8) – 9″ Radius 1/4 Turns
(6) – 9″ Radius 1/8 Turns
Joe Franco, a customer of mine, sent pictures of his landscaped Caledonia 33 Raceway styled as a mid-1960’s Monza Grand Prix.

Whitewater Farms 65
This next layout packs a lap length of just over 65 feet on to a single 4×8 foot plywood table. Several fast straights on the outer portion of the circuit are joined using wide 15″ radius turn sections. The interior of the race course provides progressively tighter turns.

Note the location of the driver’s stations in this design. Their placement along the fastest straight on the left edge of the table provides an unobstructed view of the infield underpasses. See the Construction section for detailed photographs of the table building process.
