If you don’t want stuff online – don’t put it online… If you enjoy life as a curmudgeon with no social interaction with anyone on the internet, stay offline. If you enjoy life, sharing, and friendship, go ahead and get online and share your life stories with everyone.

In other words, SOCIAL NETWORKS exist for BEING SOCIAL…

If you don’t like your pics shared on facebook, don’t put them on facebook and other websites, including but not limited to studio photos websites, youtube, photo sharing sites, etc.. If you want them shared, put them online. If you want to privately share them with one individual, email exists… Anything on facebook has a link to share next to it, even if your privacy setting is set to private – SO DON’T THINK SOME SILLY LITTLE PRIVACY SETTING WILL MAKE THINGS COMPLETELY PRIVATE AND NEVER PUBLIC – doing so you are fooling yourself — much like someone who wants to protect their money by putting it in a pillow case or something – that’s the first place people look… If you do put them on websites and want to limit who can see them, password protect them and only share the password with who you want to see them… however, after they lose the password, or you do, don’t expect to ever see them again since they are basically buried in an online dusty ol closet… from dust to dust… photos that are never seen are no good since art exists only when there is a viewer of what is created. Photos never seen are like phone calls that are made in to a cell phone that is turned off. Even passwords are not 100% effective in protecting things… ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET IS CONNECTED TO SOMETHING ELSE ON THE INTERNET… As long as there is anything online it can potentially be seen by someone someday. It may take a hacker a little while to get your password figured out, but someday, as long as the server exists and someone can try to get it they will get at it… for some breaking passwords is much like solving crossword puzzles… it’s a hobby. Your little password isn’t going to stop someone that really wants what your password is protecting, just like a glass window isn’t going to stop a burglar from breaking in even if it has a siren on it.

When lamps are put under beds or in dusty old closets they tend to burn blankets, clothes, etc. after a while. All photography is a form of capturing light… lights typically come from light sources such as lamps. This little light of mine – I’m gonna make it shine…

One reason that I like things to be public is because it’s kind of nice to know that someone someday may see that I existed here that may never have known of me before… a legacy is created… words of wisdom passed on to next generations. Images of our lives are made to have a meaning that is passed on down in our culture hundreds of years from now after the hard drive on whatever computer I’m using today is long dead and gone… but backups of photos and statements and ideas are all out there on multiple servers backed up for the many or even just one to eventually find.

If the afterlife does not exist (I think it might just exist personally, but sometimes I, like everyone else question it), all we have is this life. It’s a short, fragile thing… It’s definitely worth sharing with others, don’t you think? Have you started creating your legacy yet? Isn’t it time?

Old Electric Meter Box

The above link is an old electric meter box that I found in downtown Boonville, Missouri. The aged and weathered look of the paint on it caught my eye as did the contrast of the color of it vs the color of the nearby gutter shown in the image.

Outdoor Metallic Freezer Pattern

The above images are photos I shot of the texture on the side of an outdoor freezer. It is one of the old walk in freezers that are typically stored outside of the building for cafeterias, school lunch programs, restaurants, etc. Some parts of this image might make an interesting bump map or texture map in a 3d modelling software.

Worn Dumpster Texture

The above link is to a photo of an old side panel on a dumpster that I shot a year or two ago. The rust patterns are interesting and might work nicely as a texture map or bump map in a 3d modelling software if cropped to meet your need. Alpha may need to be adjusted so that its not so dark though.

Bent Stop Sign

This is an old stop sign that I found in downtown Boonville, Missouri. This old bent sign sitting at this location seems to tell a story. I like the composition here and the contrast between the bricks, the sky, and the red of the sign vs the pole texture. There is a lot going on texture wise.

This is the backside of a dumpster that has been worn down over time. It looks like the patterns on where the paint has been removed has happened due to rubbing against the collection truck as it is emptied. I find the swirly patterns to be rather interesting.

This is a work that I created about a semester before I created David Thomann Memorial Installation

This work was created just before the time that Photomosaics really became popular. The painting was basically a bunch of photos that work together to create an portrait of my Uncle Dave. However, I painted the photos individually. The images are from a variety of sources.. family photos, and a variety of other scenes, some which were not actually derived from photos, but were scenes I had lived through in person or had some knowledge of… The inability to really tell the whole story that was behind my reasons for creating this work led me to create the Installation later. I might try to get a better photo of this painting later since there appears to be some glare on this one.

(118) 512×512 pixel seamless rock texture pics

I uploaded (118) 512 x 512 pixel seamless textures of various rocks and rock groupings to Tubosquid. These images were extracted from photos of rocks that I shot with a digital camera, and were made seamless in Gimp. They are 512 pixels wide and high so that the image size is a power of 2, a prerequisite for some 3d render engines and game engines.

Here’s a small summary image that shows what part of the bundle looks like:

Today, I uploaded a zip file contains (42) seamless 256×256 pixel texture maps of asphalt and (27) seamless 512×512 pixel texture maps of asphalt at Turbosquid. It can be found at http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/565252?referral=mastermesh

These images are cropped from a few photos I’ve taken of asphalt from a while back. I have decided that going forwards, I am going to try to do zip file collections of seamless texture maps because it’s not too difficult to crop the images or make them seamless. In the past I uploaded raw photos that were not cropped or edited. I have decided that these sort of photos might be a bit more useful if cropped and seamless so that my loyal customers and the product’s end users won’t have to work as hard to make the images usable in their game engines and other 3d applications.

The pixel widths are 256×256 and 512×512 pixels so that the image ratio is a power of two, something that many 3d applications and game engines need to render the images proportionally correct.

working on folio

Slowly working on portfolio website (see link on right). This weekend I put together a few of the pages over there. So far the Charcoal and Ball Point Pen sections are starting to shape up.

I have not put together the other sections yet completely since those require shooting digital photos of my works. Not being the greatest photographer in the world doesn’t make getting the quality that I like out of the camera the easiest thing in the world. Also, it does not help much that I’m shooting outside when I do the shots, and it’s been fairly windy the last several days. The other day I shot some of my brother’s old artwork from highschool and the tripod fell over with the wind while I was swapping drawings with others in the house. The part of the camera that attaches to the tripod flew off of the camera when it hit the pavement. I luckily got it back together, but have not tried to attach it back to the tripod since then. Note to self – add weights of some sort to tripod the next time I try to use it.

The ball point pen drawings are mostly some of the mall small scans I took. I tried to limit it to about 30 or so images for each section. That way a nice little navigation bar table fits well in most browsers. It’s still a little too wide for the smallest screen settings, but I really don’t think most folks use the smallest screen settings usually. If so, sorry folks… I am trying to get this thing looking good, not optimized for your super low res screens… It’s tricky using the floating navigation bars I’m using because Internet Explorer is tricky. If you don’t put the dtd type up at the top of the html, it doesn’t float the css navbars where they belong, and just sticks them at the top of the page where they scroll with the rest of it.

It’s slowly coming together. I’ve been doing some cleaning around the house this weekend since we’ll likely be moving before too long… found a bunch of ol floppy disks and that reminded me that the last time I tried to put together an online web portfolio like this I was doing it on floppy and zip disks on Campus because it was like the year 2002 and I was using the free modem pool that the University of Missouri had back then… a whopping speed of 28k! No wonder I got frustrated and quit putting together the website last time, lol.

This time, things are coming together a lot smoother, and hopefully this blog will help make things work out a little better. I’ll add more to the website as I get more images put together and organized. I really like this click the image to get a bigger copy of it idea. I also like the floating nav bars with transparent backgrounds that makes it nice, clean, and easy to maneuver around in.

Got any pointers, tips, or ideas on how I can improve portfolio? Shoot away and give me some comments. I like listening to what people have to say. 🙂 😉
